Their teenaged daughter was gang raped in a moving car. However, fearing social stigma, the family of the 18-year-old Sultanpuri rape victim has chosen to be in denial where sexual assault on the girl is concerned.
On Monday, when HT visited her house, the victim's elder sister claimed that she was only beaten up and attacked with a beer bottle for bumping her bicycle into the accused's car.
She also added that the family was scared and did not want to pursue the case further.
"Like every other day, my sister went to get drinking water from a nearby block on her bicycle. A few meters away from our house, she accidentally crashed her cycle into a car with four men inside," said the victim's elder sister.
"She had an argument over this and when she refused to budge they bundled her in their car and sped off," she added.
According to police, the incident took place on Saturday around 9.45 pm when the victim had gone to pick up her mother from the factory where she is employed.
Four men in a Hyundai Accent car had an altercation with her and in a fit of rage, she damaged the windscreen of the car.
The accused asked her for compensation and when she refused, they dragged her into the car and raped her.
"The medical reports have confirmed that she was not raped. She was only beaten up and still has a swollen cheek," said the victim's sister.
"We have lodged a complaint with the police that she has been beaten up. But beyond that we do not want anything. We want to carry on with our lives now," she added.
Chhaya Sharma, deputy commissioner of police (outer) said, "They are well versed with the area and kept moving around with the girl for about two hours till we traced the Hyundai Accent car."
