The madness of three drunk men, driving a Mercedes, destroyed an entire family by causing the death of the sole bread-winner of a family.

Lalit Kumar, the auto driver who died, had recently become a father of another boy about a month and a half ago and had decided to work more hard to provide that boy a better life. But sadly, his life ended up as yet another case of drunk driving.

“I cannot understand what prompts people to drink and drive despite knowing

that it is dangerous, for them as well as for others. Lalit didn’t have even single bad habit. But today he is no more. He had recently brought his father to Delhi for treatment. Now who will take care of the family?” asked Arun Tiwari, Kumar’s neighbour.

It was the police who broke this news to Kumar’s family early Sunday morning.

Kumar, a resident of Paharganj, had been driving an auto since many years. “He was drove very carefully. And yet he fell prey to someone else’s fault. Of course, those people will be released on bail some day but Lalit is never going to come back,” Tiwari added.

Kumar had been returning from Vasant Kunj after finishing his night shift when a speeding Mercedes driven by one Harshmeet Marwah hit his auto.

The incident took place at 2:30am on Nelson Mandela Marg on Sunday. Marwah has been arrested after a PCR call was made about the incident.

“Marwah, who was driving the Mercedes, was drunk and was not even in a position to talk when he was detained by police. Despite our crackdown on drunk drivers, Delhites haven’t learnt a lesson,” a senior police officer said.

Police said Marwah along with his friends had gone for a party at a Vasant Kunj mall.

The auto was badly damaged in the accident. “The Mercedes was speeding and the mangled remains of the auto tell the entire story. It overturned and Lalit died due to excessive bleeding,” Tiwari said.
