The August Kranti Marg that runs in front of the Siri Fort auditorium in south Delhi has turned into a death trap for commuters, claiming five lives in road accidents over the past week.
On Monday, three persons died in two accidents. They included a woman identified by the police as Sonia Sethia, half-sister of movie star Fardeen Khan.
Sethia was killed near the Uday Park bus stand around 1.30am when a Maruti Swift Dzire speeding at about 150 kmph hit a Honda City from behind. The impact was so powerful that Sethia, sitting on the back seat of the Honda, and the driver of the Dzire, died on the spot.
Sethia, a resident of New Friends Colony, was returning home after dinner at a friend’s in Gulmohar Park, the police said. Less than six hours later, a speeding tempo mowed down a 10-year-old schoolboy crossing the road near Ansal Plaza, barely 200 metres from the site of the first accident.
The traffic police said they were planning to tackle the problem on the accident-prone road. “Each and every accident on this stretch is being analysed and we are in the process of drawing a traffic plan to make it safer,” said Sudhir Yadav, special CP (traffic).
