The college festival at Delhi University’s Ramjas College on Friday turned out to be a nightmarish experience. With Punjabi rapper Honey Singh performing at the college grounds, there was pandemonium as students tried to make their way in, leading to a stampede-like situation at the entry point.

A student of Dayal Singh College has reportedly been admitted to the Indira Hospital with serious injuries. The girl’s family maintained that she was taken to the hospital with serious injuries and she still remains critical in the ICU.

However, the college authorities tried to downplay the episode, claiming that the girl did not suffer any serious injuries. “The concert was supposed to start at 6:30pm and we were to open the gates at 4pm. Instead, we opened both the gates at 3pm, following which there was a mild stampede. One girl felt uneasy so we rushed her to the hospital. But she is absolutely fine now,” said Rajendra Prasad, principal, Ramjas College.

The college also said that it was the large crowd and the limited entry points that led to the chaos. “There were more than 30,000 students who had come for the concert,” added Prasad.

However, police officials said that no case of either a stampede or injuries had been recorded. “There were about 15,000 students who had come for the even and there was no case of a stampede. There was the usual pushing and shoving but no one was injured in the process,” said a police official.

The students claimed that there was a scuffle as students started pushing against each other to get to the stage first.
