Highlight Story

It’s that time of year already. A steaming cup of mulled wine, a generous slice of apple strudel and a whole lot of Christmas goodies await visitors to the German Christmas Market at German House on Nyaya Marg this weekend (December 5 and 6).

Now in its 12th year, the German Christmas Market is to Delhi’s Christmas what the Blind School Mela is to Diwali. Walk into this beautifully festive bazaar and you’ll see why it’s truly worth the effort.

From nutcrackers, stars and candles, to cookie tins, glass balls, toys, and tree ornaments, here this is one market where you can stock up for Christmas and New Years.

One of the biggest attractions this year is the authentic German spread — German beer, Glühwein, Kaffee und Kuchen and German sausages, specially flown in from Deustchland for the market. And in true festive spirit, German families will be serving home-baked cakes like zwetschgenkuchen (plum cake) and butterkuchen (butter cake), freshly baked waffles and other German specialities.

Adults get a chance to check out some lifestyle products and gifting ideas for the festive season as well. Expect Christmas trees, handmade decorations, innovative paper products, photographs and designer ware. The Christmas Market has the most beautiful Christmas tree in Delhi, all lit up and decorated.

For children, there are nativity scenes from the Bible. Kids can also participate in the painting competition, watch magic shows by German magician Janko Renos and whisper their wish-list into Father Christmas’ ear.

Or they can sing along with the choir from the German School who’ll be singing Christmas carols while Santa Claus will be distributing gifts to the little ones.
