An argument over a petty matter of not footing food bill of Rs 180 cost a 34-year-old man his life.

Deepak Singh, a supervisor with a private housekeeping firm, was first beaten up by a restaurant owner and his two aides and then pushed from the third floor of his house in the airports authority colony.

The incident happened around 11.30 pm on Wednesday near INA market in south Delhi's Kotla Mubarakpur area. The police said that Singh had gone to a restaurant located at INA market for dinner with his relatives, Nathan and Babu. The dinner amount was Rs 180.

Singh allegedly told the restaurant owner that he would pay the bill later, which the owner refused to accept, said Singh's brother Ajay.

"They had a heated argument and the restaurant owner and his two men beat up my brother with sticks and a hammer before bringing him home. They assaulted my brother even at the house. And when my family members intervened to pacify the restaurant owner, they took him to the third floor and pushed him down from the terrace," said Ajay.

Singh landed on a parked Wagon R car and suffered multiple injuries.

Police said that Singh was rushed to AIIMS where doctors declared him dead on arrival. A case of murder has been registered in the matter and some people have been detained for questioning. The restaurant owner is absconding.

The police are verifying the allegations of the deceased's family. Singh's father is employed with the Airports Authority of India.
