Fighting a change for another

Residents of Model Town in northwest Delhi have been fighting tooth and nail to prevent the upgrade of their colony from category D to category B that will lead to a 56% increase in property tax to the government.

Their reason is simple — poor infrastructure and collapsing civic amenities in the colony should be corrected before the upgrade.

According to the latest findings of the Municipal Valuation Committee (MVC), it has been proposed that the Model Town colony will be upgraded.

The MVC, constituted by the Delhi government, earns revenue through property tax. The MVC is divided into eight categories — from A to H — that divide the city into properties ranging from upscale to rural.

Residents claimed that the area is surrounded by slums and unauthorised colonies — mostly F category colonies — and is plagued by several problems such as cattle menace, bad roads, traffic chaos and parking problems that do not make it fit for an upgrade.

“We strongly protest any such move as this will mean we will have to pay huge amounts of money for shoddy work done by the civic agency. There are no proper facilities in place. We have even roped in the area councillor to press for our demands,” said MP Singh, president of Model Town residents’ welfare association.

“Even the water is not potable and the sewage system is choked which leads to roads getting flooded. There is hardly any parking space and the roads are always choc-a-bloc,” said Singh.

Other residents complained about the poor traffic situation in their colony.

“We had to put up iron rods tied with ropes to segregate the flow of vehicles and ease congestion in the Model Town-I market. These rods were put up last month on our initiative and had we not done this, traffic in the area would have been thrown out of gear,” said Hari Kishan Bansal, a senior citizen living in the area.
