Yet to get high security registration plates for your car? Be ready to pay Rs. 2,000 for the offence from Saturday.

After two futile attempts towards the end of last year, the Delhi traffic police have decided to initiate a crackdown on all new vehicles plying on roads without high-security registration plates.

"We will prosecute all violating vehicles bought after May 1 last year and impose a fine of Rs. 2,000 from Saturday," said Anil Shukla, additional commissioner of police (traffic).

After a public notice issued by the transport department on Saturday, the traffic police will start booking owners of vehicles plying without the high-security number plates, Shukla said.

In October, the traffic police had planned similar drives twice but it did not materialise as the transport department wanted more time to streamline the process to issue high-security number plates.

The transport department had set a deadline of October 31 for all owners of vehicles bought after April 30, 2012, to get their high-security number plates installed.

"We have taken up the matter with the transport department. The department will issue a public notice on Saturday. After this, we will immediately start our crackdown," Shukla said.

Transport department officials said thousands of high- security number plates were lying with them but the owners have not turned up to get them installed.
