The six-year wait for the land bill, one of UPA's most ambitious legislation, finally got over on Thursday as the Lok Sabha approved the amendments passed in the Rajya Sabha.

The new Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement law, that replaces the 1894 land acquisition act, aims to ensure no sale of land without the consent of the owner and provide compensation to the tune of four times the marker price.

The government decided to stretch the monsoon session till Saturday. The current monsoon session has already been extended from August 30 to September 6 earlier.

Government desperation is obvious as after a lull of almost two years it has been able to bring the Opposition on board.

Sources told HT that apart from passing the pension fund (PFRDA) bill in Rajya Sabha, the UPA floor managers will take up Citizenship (Amendment) Bill that aims to expand the eligibility category for registration as 'overseas Indian cardholder.'
