A finance company in the Shalimar Garden area of Ghaziabad was robbed of cash and gold items worth more than R8 lakh on Saturday.
Around 10 armed robbers barged into the Muthoot Finance's office and robbed it at gunpoint, police officials said. Police suspect the involvement of an insider and have detained the branch accountant.
Senior police officials, including inspector general (Meerut zone), arrived at the crime scene and found that the company's CCTV cameras and the alarm system had been lying defunct since September 17.
Senior Superintendent of Police Raghubir Lal said there was a robbery attempt at another nearby branch of the same company a couple of days ago, but the incident was not reported to the police.
The police officers said apart from R6 lakh in cash, the robbers took away around 80 packets containing gold items. "The packets had different valuation of R15,000, R20,000 and R35,000. The exact valuation is still being calculated," Lal said. The final valuation is estimated at R30 lakh.
The police have picked up the company’s accountant, Vinay Yadav, a resident of Laxmi Nagar area of Delhi, who was on his last working day.
"Two of the robbers had come to the office on Friday afternoon and had spoken to Yadav. During the robbery, the assailants held the manager on gunpoint and asked Yadav to open the cash lockers. He opened up only one of the three lockers that contained cash," Lal said.
"We have formed teams to nab them and are also interrogating Yadav," Lal said.
