The CBI on Tuesday registered an FIR against seven officials of Central Public Works Department (CPWD) and DDA as well as a city-based private firm over irregularities in another CWG project. This time it is for the award of contracts for laying synthetic flat Lawn Bowl Greens at an exorbitant price of around Rs 9.88 crore.

Jubilee Sports Private Limited, the private company which had bagged the contract, has been booked for being part of a conspiracy to inflate the cost by around R3.88 crore.

The agency also raided 20 residential and official premises in the NCR on Tuesday, including those belonging to the private firm's director Siddharth Verma and executive Rajiv Sharma. On March 18, HT had first reported that the CBI was likely to file a FIR in this case.

"The cost of the contract had been inflated from the estimate of around R6 crore by including false amounts against its cost, transportation, etc," said CBI's spokesperson Dharini Mishra.

According to a CBI source, "The tracks were installed in three places-Yamuna Sports complex, DPS RK Puram and Jawaharlal Nehru stadium."

The synthetic surface for Lawn Bowls was imported from London, he added.

The OC had in January last year issued an Expression of Interest (EOI)-part of the tendering process-asking for quotes from bidders.

According to the OC, the eligibility criteria for laying synthetic surface included approval from the International Federation, suitability to the Indian weather conditions and the experience of having laid a minimum of 25 outdoor Synthetic Greens.

Till now, nine FIRs have been registered by the CBI in connection with the irregularities in CWG projects. CPWD officials were earlier named in its FIR about irregularities amounting to R320 crore in the award of contracts for the upgradation and renovation projects at the Talkatora and Shivaji stadiums.
