Five held with stolen scrap worth Rs 25 lakh in Delhi

Five persons, including a young transporter, were arrested in north-east Delhi allegedly with stolen copper and brass scraps worth around Rs 25 lakh, police said on Wednesday.

The arrested have been identified as Rakesh (34), Marfat (22), Subhash Yadav (36), Ansaar (26) and Vickey Gaba (21), a senior police officer said. They were apprehended from Bhajanpura on Tuesday on a tip-off.

"They were on way to Sunder Nagri to sell the scraps to a scrap dealer, Shehzad," the officer said.

Huge quantity of stolen copper and brass scraps worth around Rs 25 lakhs, TATA 407 vehicles and a car were recovered allegedly from them, he said.

During interrogation, he claimed, the accused told the police that they had robbed the scraps from a godown in Swaroop Nagar on the intervening night of July 18 and 19.

Rakesh was allegedly involved in two cases and was first arrested in 2000 in a murder case. He remained in jail for more than five years. During this period, he developed links with criminals and started committing more crimes after he came out.

Marfat, who hails from West Bengal, is running a scrap shop in Jahangirpuri.

Ansar and Subhash joined the gang at the instance of their employer Vickey, who runs a transport company along with his father.
