Fog disrupts flight operations at IGI

delhi Updated: Jan 16, 2010 09:04 IST

Dense fog enveloped the IGI airport in New Delhi for third consecutive morning on Saturday disrupting the schedules of around 25 domestic and international flights and causing inconvenience to the passengers.

About 12 domestic flights and 11 arriving and departing international flights were delayed by over two to three hours, two international flights were rescheduled while one inbound flight from Abu Dhabi had to be diverted as thick fog enveloped the airport, sources at the airport said.

Flight operations late last night largely remained undisrupted. Runway visibility hovered around 125 metres and above, forcing the airport authorities to implement the low visibility procedures.

The runway visibility dropped to a low of 75 metres at around 6 am while general visibility remained below 50 metres for both the CAT-III B compliant runways, leading to disruption in movement of flights.

The situation improved after an hour and runway visibility increased to over 1000 metres.

After remaining free from fog for five days, the Delhi airport has been experiencing thick fog since Wednesday night, affecting the schedules of over 300 flights, causing inconvenience to the air travellers.

The problem intensified when software of the airport's radar system crashed on Thursday evening.
