As many as 20 trains were cancelled and over 40 rescheduled on Monday due to spillover effect of major fog-induced disruptions last week, even as more than 50 of them arrived in the Capital several hours behind schedule.

Though there was no fog, railways cancelled 20 trains including Poorva, Kaifiyat and Taj express trains and revised the timings of 40 of them including that of several Rajdhani trains as corresponding trains were running inordinately late.

"The cancellations and rescheduling were due to the late running of corresponding trains as the prolonged foggy conditions during the past few weeks had left train schedule haywire," a Northern Railway spokesperson said.

He said more than 50 trains also arrived in the Capital several hours behind schedule. They included Chennai, Bhubaneswar, Kolkata and Sealdah Rajdhani trains besides Poorva and Bandra-Nizamuddin Garib Rath express.

Railways had earlier cancelled about 20 trains till January 31 to cope with the situation.

According to an estimate, Railways is losing Rs 2 to Rs 3 crore each day due to cancellation and rescheduling of trains.

However, the spokesperson said normalcy in train services can return soon if the weather condition remains good in the coming days.
