An injured Amarjeet Singh Chadha kept waiting for help for nearly an hour after a head constable pumped three bullets into his chest in old Delhi.
His family says no one bothered to take him to a hospital.
Chadha lay in a pool of blood for 45 minutes before he was taken to Tirath Ram Shah Charitable Hospital in Civil Lines. His employee Mohit was present at the time of the incident.
“The incident took place around 8.45pm and Chadha reached hospital at 10pm. He was taken to Tirath Ram Shah Hospital in Civil Lines, whereas St Stephen’s Hospital was just 15 minutes away,” said Amarjeet’s brother Balbir Singh.
No one in his family knew that his love for the shiny metal would cost him his life.
“Gold was his only love. He was popularly known as chain waale sardarji in Old Delhi and west Delhi. He also pursued wrestling as a hobby when he was younger; he had been trained by the famous wrestler Dara Singh,” said Balvinder Singh, a relative of Chadha.
Chadha, who would wear seven-eight gold chains, had a flourishing dry fruit business in Old Delhi’s Fatehpuri area.
On Saturday, Chadha was returning to his Rani Bagh house in northwest Delhi after closing his shop.
“He was also carrying Rs95,000 in his car. That amount is still missing,” Balbir added.
