The body of a 26-year-old aeronautical engineer was found on the taxiway at the Indira Gandhi International Airport on Monday night.
Sansriti Sinha, a senior technician with Deccan Airlines, was run over by an unidentified vehicle in the high-security area when she was on her way to get some equipment after detecting a technical fault in a Chennai-bound flight, the police said.
"Prima facie it seems to be a case of hit and run. The postmortem report also suggests that she died because of an accident. However, we are investigating other angles," said Aditya Arya, joint commissioner of police (operations).
Airport officials and Sansriti's relatives suspect foul play. "It didn't look like she had met with an accident. There were no bruises on her body. Her head was smashed. It looked like somebody had attacked her," a senior airport official said.
Sansriti was unmarried. Her roommate and cousin Shilpi said: "The police have not been able to trace the vehicle that hit her. How is it possible? What is it that they are trying to hide?"
The police said there were tyre marks on Shilpi's head and that she died around 9.56 pm — when her watch stopped possibly due to the impact of the accident. The body was spotted by the pilot of another airline. She was taken to Safdarjung Hospital where she was declared brought dead.
