There are around 10 water fountains in Vasant Vihar’s parks. Residents say they are an eyesore. Did the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) consult the residents before constructing them?

The MCD is aware of the public’s sentiments and taking necessary steps to address it. The process has been initiated.

Most of the fountains were constructed a decade ago. They were constructed with the consent of the MLA who also provided the funds.

But keeping in view the practical difficulties and opinion of all, including the residents’ associations, their construction was discontinued.

Residents complain that the defunct fountains are a health hazard, as they have become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

What is the MCD doing?

Accumulation of rainwater at the fountains is a cause of concern as these pose serious threat to public health. We are filling up the space with soft earth and will convert them into flowerbeds. Work has started at many places.

Is there a plan to dismantle these fountains?

The MCD is examining the feasibility of removing the structures.

Many small parks in Vasant Vihar have 30 to 60 stone benches. Residents say the money used to buy these could have been put to better use.

Benches are generally put on the request of people's representatives and residents' associations. Their number can be rationalised.

The residents' associations are requested to contact the deputy director, Horticulture, of South Zone or the director, Horticulture.
