Her father took part in India’s Independence movement 60 years ago. On Tuesday morning, his daughter was found murdered—stabbed several times—at her residence in Bara Hindu Rao area in North Delhi.

According to police, the matter came to light after neighbours complained about a foul smell emanating from the house of Keshar Jahan (54), reportedly the daughter of freedom fighter Hakim Abdul Latif.

Jahan had been living alone for the past few years.

“After receiving the call, a police team reached the spot and opened the door,” said a police officer on the condition of anonymity, as he is not authorized to speak to the media.

“She was found tied to her bed and there were multiple stab injury marks all over her body. She was immediately rushed to the nearby Bara Hindu Rao hospital where the doctors declared her brought dead.”

Shock and disbelief was writ plainly on the faces of neighbours as they spoke to police about the tragic incident .

“Everything was fine till Monday evening,” said a neighbour, Shahid.

“In the morning, a few of our neighbours told me about the stench coming out of her house. Sensing something was wrong, we immediately informed the police.”

According to Shahid, Jahan used to subsist on the money sent by her elder brother, who presently lives in the United States.

The police have ruled out the possibility of robbery, as the house was not ransacked and all the valuables were intact.

“We are investigating the case from every possible angle. Fingerprints collected from the spot have been sent to forensic laboratory for examination,” added the senior officer.

The police said that the motive behind the murder could be her property.

The police are questioning people in the area and are investigating if the deceased Keshar Jahan had any sort of personal enmity with any person.
