When the police were busy with polling duty, a lone assailant allegedly barged into a French airline official’s south Delhi residence, held his Indian-origin wife and domestic help hostage and fled with cash and valuables worth lakhs.

The incident, the police said, was reported from the residence of one ‘Mr Gilles’, a French national, in Shanti Niketan’s D block around 11 am on Tuesday morning. “He was away at work when the assailant, posing as an electrician, landed on the main door of his house and told the household help that Gilles had asked him to fix something,” said a senior police officer.

According to police, the domestic help told the assailant to wait outside, went to check with his employer’s wife and shortly returned only to tell him he should come back when Gilles was home.

At this, the assailant protested, claimed Gilles had said the work was urgent but was finally made to leave by the persistent domestic help, police said.

“Just five minutes later, the man appeared at the door again and, this time, had a knife.

He grabbed hold of the domestic help, overpowered her and bound her with some plastic rope before going for her employer’s wife,” the officer said.

“According to the domestic help, he then barged into her (employer’s wife) room and demanded he be directed to the cupboard containing all the cash and valuables in the house before binding and gagging her, too.”

The assailant then cleaned the cupboard of jewellery worth several lakhs and around Rs 12,000 in cash.

A case of armed robbery has been registered at the South Campus Police Station and the possible involvement of small-time gangs operating in the area is being investigated, the police said.
