Fulfill all legalities on airport, govt tells Male

India has urged the Maldives government to “fulfill” all legal processes and adhere to relevant contracts while terminating the Male airport contract with GMR.
Reacting to the verdict of a Singapore court, which ruled that the Maldives government can take back the Male airport from the private firm, ministry of external affairs spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said the government is studying the judgement.
He said there are two issues in the case — one regarding the sovereign right of a nation and other on the legality of the agreement, which was linked to the compensation to GMR and its associates in Malaysia. The latter part, he said, has not been “affected or responded” in today’s judgement.
“Fulfilment of all legal process and requirement is what we want to see in this case, and we hope all legal processes are carried through,” he said. The Singapore Court, which had earlier stayed the termination of the contract, said on Thursday that Maldives has the authority to take back the airport.
