Residents of Greater Noida have asked students to get their verification done by colleges and furnish good conduct bonds if they want rented accommodation. Students feel the move is unjustified.
More than 50 per cent of the population in sectors like Alpha, Beta and Gamma are students. There are more than 50 engineering and management colleges in the area and in the absence of adequate hostel facilities at college campuses, over 15,000 students live in rented rooms.
Social worker Ajay Jain said like RWAs in Noida, there are Neighbourhood Management Councils(NMC) in Greater Noida. “To prevent anti-social elements from gaining entry in the guise of students, and to check group clashes, NMCs have asked house owners to get verification of student tenants done through colleges,” said Jain.
“Rowdy students have vitiated the atmosphere. Girls hesitate to step out due to the presence of college students who drink beer openly on streets and in parks,” said Jain.
Clashes have become a regular feature. He said when residents complain to the police, the students terrorise them.
Kasna Station Officer Amardeep Lal said: “Several clashes were reported among students. Verification from colleges and a good conduct bond will restrain them from creating disturbances in the area."
Neighbourhood Management Council representative Dr. D.K. Garg said: “Colleges will sign verification forms only after getting a good conduct behaviour affidavit from students.”
Students feel the demand is unjustified. “We are not criminals,” said some. However, they admitted that some students were creating nuisance in the area.
