Come Tuesday and Delhiites will heave a sigh of relief as restrictions on several arterial roads in the Capital will be fully withdrawn.

According to the schedule with the Delhi Police, all foreign athletes will leave India by Monday night.

“We will continue to enforce restrictions on airport-bound dedicated Games lane till Monday night. Restrictions on the roads leading to the IGI Airport will be through out the day till Saturday due to heavy movement of athletes towards airport,” said Ajay Chadha, special commissioner day (Traffic).

“However, on Sunday and Monday restrictions will be imposed as and when required because the frequency of athletes movement will be less on these two days,” he added.

The lanes which will remain dedicated include Nizamuddin Bridge, bridge over Barapullah Nallah, Lodi Road, Safdarjung Road, Kamal Ataturk Marg, Panchsheel Marg, Sardar Patel Marg, NH-8, and Airport Road, said the Delhi Traffic police sources. On September 24, Delhi Traffic police started enforcing partial restrictions on the lanes to ferry athletes from airport to Games Village.

It was intensified from September 27 and the traffic police started issuing challans to violators, who had to pay R2,000 each. So far, only one FIR has been registered for entering the lanes.

According to the traffic police, nearly 2,500 motorists have been prosecuted for entering the dedicated lanes since the Games started. Nearly 30 vehicles have also been impounded.
