India's first privately funded, promoted and run Rapid MetroRail Gurgaon (RMG) would be a state-of-the-art and high-tech intra-city mode of transportation.

The project is scheduled to start operations in January 2013.

While the project is yet to receive a formal nod from the Union ministry of urban development, it has been given an informal go-ahead. The Haryana government has sanctioned Rs 1,088 crore for the project.

Starting from Sikanderpur Metro station, RMG would meander through the posh DLF City (II) and touch Belvedere Park and Towers, DLF Cybercity, National Media Centre, Ambience Lagoon apartments before turning towards DLF SEZ in DLF City III. Other locations that the Metro will cover are Hotel Leela Kempinski, Ambience Mall, Hotel Trident Hilton and border Toll Plaza on Gurgaon Expressway.

With features such as Automatic Train Operation system that does not necessarily require human driver to run the train and third-rail system allowing the train to draw power from under the tracks, the aesthetics of the entire 6.1 km-long Metro stretch will be somewhat on the lines of Dubai Metro, the officials of the special purpose vehicle (SPV) company Rapid MetroRail Gurgaon Limited (RMGL) claimed.

RMGL is the special vehicle company of ITNL Enso Rail Systems (IERS) and DLF Metro. Former DMRC director CBK Rao is the chief of the DLF Metro Limited.

This service that forms a loop by starting and terminating near DMRC's Sikanderpur Metro station on Qutub Minar-Sushant Lok line, would also play as a feeder system for DMRC's Metro service.

The 75-km-long Dubai Metro Network has 87 trains and 47 stations. It is said to be the latest and the most stylish Metro network in the world.
