Want an election ticket? Get a few supporters for the LK Advani rally. With the municipal elections to be held next year, this is the answer being given to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket hopefuls.
Advani is concluding his Jan Chetna Yatra at Ramlila Maidan on November 20 and BJP councillors of the MCD have been asked to gather supporters to showcase the party's prowess.
According to a Delhi BJP insider, this year, the party has decided to consider the number of supporters at the rally as the benchmark. It has been holding zonal meetings for the past few weeks, asking councillors to sign up supporters.
"By bringing supporters to the rally, a hopeful has more chances of getting a ticket," said a BJP councillor, on the condition of anonymity. He added that all party workers have been asked to hold meetings at local level to garner as many supporters as possible. The BJP is aiming to get at least one lakh supporters to the rally even though the Ramlila Maidan may not be able to accommodate so many of them.
According to another councilor, it will possibly be the last big rally before the MCD election. Ticket seekers have also been asked to collect funds for the upcoming elections in April.
"With trifurcation of MCD on the cards, the election is going to be very crucial, which is why the right selection of candidates is necessary. With hundreds of party workers aiming for a ticket, the show of supporters is necessary," said the councillor.
