A northeast girl studying in Jawahar Lal Nehru University (JNU) was allegedly molested by three men inside the campus on Saturday. According to police, two of the accused are students at JNU, while the third was an outsider.

The police said the victim, a 24-year-old woman from Assam, was molested at one of the eateries inside the campus.

The incident reportedly took place at the Northeast Dhaba around 5 pm.

“The woman came to the eatery with two friends. The accused were sitting in front of them. Apparently, the outsider started making lewd gestures at the woman,” a senior police officer said.

The police said when the girl, who is pursuing Ph.D in History, objected to this, the trio got into an altercation with her.

“They started abusing me. When I objected, they hit me. My friends tried to rescue me, but the men hit them, too. They called us all kinds of names,” said the victim.

The men then fled from the spot. The two accused students from JNU have been identified as Imran Ameen and Amit Mishra. The outsider has not yet been identified.

The police said a case of molestation was registered at Vasant Kunj (North) police station after a medical examination of the woman at Safdarjung Hospital confirmed molestation. But the accused are yet to be arrested. “We are investigating the matter and will make arrests in the case,” added the officer.

The woman further alleged that the trio targeted her, as she was from the northeast. “They kept calling me racially-motivated names while hitting me,” she alleged.

On November 22, last year, four outsiders who were allegedly drinking inside the campus also eve-teased a girl that led to massive protests inside the campus.
