In a tragic accident, a one-and-a-half-year-old girl died after falling from fourth floor of Prince Apartments in IP Extension area of east Delhi on Monday.

Alima, the deceased, had come to visit her grandparents when she slipped through the gap between the railings along the stairs. The head of the kid broke down after she hit the floor falling freely from a height of over 100 metres. And it all happened in front of her mother, Mantasha.

A senior police officer said the child, Alima, along with her mother, had come to meet her ailing grandparents at their E-block fourth floor flat in Prince Apartments. Being a toddler, Alima had randomly ran out of her grandparents's flat and was trying to hide near the railing along the stairs, as her mother came running after her to catch the child.

"The unfortunate part about the incident is that Alima's mother, Mantasha, had tried to grab one of her legs when she saw her falling through the gap. But despite her best efforts, she lost her grip and the toddler fell from a height of over 100 metres," the officer said, adding no case has been registered since the victim's family did not allege any foul play.

Alima's grandfather, Abdul Sattar Khan Bharti, said, "My wife and I were sitting on the sofa when someone knocked at the door. My wife went at the door and became happy after seeing Alima. They went inside the kitchen and had a glass of water. Later, Mantasha sat on the sofa and Alima was sitting in her lap. But, since she was a restless child, she started running around the house and very soon went out," Bharti said.

"Mantasha ran after her to catch her. As soon as she reached near the stairs, she found Alima leaning against the railing. She grabbed her by her leg, but could not prevent her from falling down. All that she was left with was her shoe," he added.

Alima was rushed to Hedgewar hospital where doctors pronounced her dead on arrival. Hospital authorities had called the police. Alima's father, Aman Ali, works with a travel agency.
