The police have arrested three persons, including an interior designer, for setting a businessman’s car on fire in Greater Kailash area of southeast Delhi. Sources in the Crime Branch said the accused, identified as Kunal Kapoor, was a good friend of the victim. Kapoor had allegedly even kidnapped the victim’s son and demanded a ransom of Rs 1crore.

“The complainant, a GK- based businessman, was a good friend of Kapoor who is an interior designer and lives in Rajouri Garden. They were family friends for the past 12 years and had even gone to Mauritius for summer holidays with their families in 2009,” said a senior police officer, requesting anonymity.

Police said they had a dispute after returning from Mauritius over financial transactions. “Kapoor, along with his cousin Nitin Chopra and friend Sahil, had kidnapped the victim’s son on March 2010, and demanded Rs 1 crore and a luxury car as ransom. The case was settled, but again on December 9, 2010, the trio went to the complainant’s godown at Rohtak Road near Liberty Cinema and set the godown and a car on fire,” he said.

The victim’s family had gone to Shirdi at the time of the incident. The trio again went to his house on May 9 and set his innova car on fire. Earlier, the case was registered at the GK police station, but the investigation was later transferred to the Crime Branch. The complainant continued getting threats and demands for money. “During the course of investigation, we found Kapoor was behind the conspiracy, as he wanted to take revenge for his “humiliation”. He along with two others have been arrested and were produced before the court,” he said. Further investigations are on.
