After dealing with Team Anna, the Group of Ministers on Media is all set to counter the developmental claims being propagated by Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi. The GoM, which was formed last year during Team Anna's agitation for the Jan Lokpal Bill, will hold a press conference in Ahmedabad on Wednesday.
During the event, home minister P Chidambaram, information and broadcasting minister Ambika Soni and law minister Salman Khurshid will elaborate on the pro-development agenda and schemes of the UPA government, funds provided by the Centre to Gujarat, and overall performance of schemes in the state.
"The GoM will also take up questions on national issues," a senior official said, adding that the event is part of the UPA's outreach programme.
The GoM will provide data on Gujarat’s performance, particularly with regard to social sector schemes such as NREGA and the NRHM, besides infra projects under JNNURM. A status report of state’s growth in recent years, including industrial projects and investments, is also likely to be provided.
“There is no denying that Gujarat is surging, but the point to be noted is the UPA's contribution — be it the dedicated freight corridor, JNNURM or new IIT,” Arjun Modhwadia, state Congress chief, told HT.
Gujarat will go to the polls later this year.
