A 33-year-old man was shot dead when he was trying to stop four robbers from barging into the house of a senior citizen in Southwest Delhi in the wee hours of Sunday.

Another person was injured in the incident as well.

According to police, the incident happened in Indira Park in Palam at around 1:30 am. The police said four thieves tried to break open the house of a senior citizen who lives alone in Indira Park Gali Number-1.

“The robbers were trying to break open the grille of one of the windows to get into the ground floor residence of 67-year-old Damyanti Devi.

She heard the commotion and cried out for help,” said a senior police officer.

The police said the deceased, Harish Kumar, an employee with a private company and Rishi Chauhan (28), another resident in the locality, heard the elderly woman’s cries and rushed to rescue her.

“The deceased along with Rishi and other neighbours caught two of the robbers while the other two managed to escape,” added the officer.

The police said that while the residents were beating the two robbers one of the accused managed to whip out a country-made pistol and fired two rounds. One bullet hit Kumar in the chest and the other hit Chauhan on the shoulder.

In the ensuing commotion, the two robbers managed to flee from the spot and joined their accomplices. Though the residents tried to chase the robbers, they couldn’t catch them.

Kumar was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead. Chauhan, however, is out of danger.
