delhi Updated: Jan 06, 2011 00:33 IST

A gang of burglars struck at three shops across two adjacent blocks in east Delhi’s Shakarpur area and decamped with cash and valuables amounting to more than R6 lakh on Tuesday night.

“All the incidents were discovered between 9am and 11am on Tuesday, when the shop owners reached their respective properties. All shops have been broken into in the same manner. The stolen cash and merchandise are estimated to be upwards of R6 lakh,” said a senior police officer.

Police said the first incident was reported by Sanjay Kumar, 39, a stationery shop owner in D Block of the area.

“The locks had been picked and the shutter was sliced through to gain entry. Some cash, stationery items and a silver statue were missing. Almost simultaneously, Deepak Verma, a chemist, found that his shop in JK Block had been burgled in a similar manner and R1 lakh in cash in addition to medicines worth R50,000 have been stolen,” the officer said.

“We have registered cases and are investigating the matter,” the officer added.
