IT professional Dinesh Chopra shifted to DLF phase V three years ago from the United States. However, he doesn’t carry a voter’s identification card.

With the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) elections round the corner, he had hoped to receive his first electoral card in India. But when he saw a clerical error in his virtual card posted on on March 31, he was disappointed.

“My date of birth has been documented as September 2, whereas it is January 2. I sent an online complaint but the mail bounced back. If you call the MCG number, the phone is left unanswered,” Chopra said.

He was shocked when he heard that no changes can be made in the list at this stage.

Moreover, Chopra is not alone. While some voters received IDs with their names spelt wrong, in other cases the house address was incomplete.

“ID cards of residents in our locality don’t feature the names of the apartment,” said Vijay Mishra, a resident of Samanvay Apartment which falls under ward number 32.

Another resident, Sudarshan Kumar Joshi, was waiting to get his first voter’s ID in Gurgaon after he relocated in 2007 from Gurdaspur in Punjab.

He said: “My name and my father’s name have been incorrectly spelt in the card. I am surprised why MCG gave the job to such incompetent people.”

MCG, which had outsourced the task of making the voters list to a private agency, will not welcome any proposed change at this stage.

“The objections should have been raised earlier. When they were given the option, why didn’t they do it then? Now, when the entire list is ready, it’s pointless to raise an objection,” said a senior MCG official who requested anonymity.
