Google to the rescue of fog-hit railways, to help fight delays

Even as hundreds of trains continue to be delayed due to fog, the railways has launched a first-of-its-kind webpage ( using Google Maps, to allow passengers to view the areas where fog has affected normal operation of trains, anywhere in the country in the past 24 hours.

In April 2012, the Railways launched http://trainenquiry. com to let passengers know the status of all trains in India.

"You click on a section (view trains on map live) and you are directed to, which was launched in October 2012 to provide a visual display of all running trains," said a senior railway official.

"Trains highlighted in blue indicate those that are running on time while the red marks indicate the trains that are delayed. If you click on a particular train, the map will show the exact route of the train, including all the stoppages and the current location of the train on the real time basis," he said.

The passenger is required to enter the train number and can see the entire route on the screen. Passengers can quickly search if a train has been affected by fog, and even check exact sections of the route where fog has caused delays.
