In an apparent case of gang war, a local goon was stabbed and shot dead, while his other accomplice was stabbed by members of a rival gang in Gokulpuri area of northeast Delhi late on Saturday night.

One man has been arrested and police recovered a pistol of Italian make from his possession. Police said the use of foreign weapons by criminals was a worrying trend.

The incident took place around 11:45 p.m. on Saturday when three members of Deepak gang, including the leader, were consuming alcohol near a park in Sanjay Colony area of Gokulpuri.

In the meantime, members of their rival gang, headed by Anil Kalia, reached the scene and picked up a fight with Deepak’s gang. All the gang members are in their mid twenties.

“While Deepak fled with Dola, another member of his gang, Anil Kalia and his associates chased Rajesh. Rajesh was caught and stabbed several times. When he was fleeing, the accused opened fire on him. At some distance they found Chatrapal, another member of Deepak gang, and opened fire on him,” said a senior police officer.

While Rajesh died on the spot, Chatrapal is admitted with critical injuries at GTB Hospital. The gang members are wanted in several cases of extortion, murder, robberies, and pick pocketing in Blueline buses in east Delhi.

Police said the attacks were the fallout of territorial dispute between the two gangs.

“There was a argument between Deepak and Anil Kalia when the former had trespassed over the area of another. When Deepak did not back out, Anil decided to teach him a lesson and decided to eliminate him,” said the officer.

The accused who was arrested has been identified as Mukesh alias Bittu. “We recovered a pistol of Italian make that was used in the crime. A hunt is on for other gang members,” said the officer.

A case of murder has been registered at Gokulpuri Police Station.
