Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday said that his government was committed to ensure the safety and security of every woman of the country.

Speaking in the Lok Sabha during the motion of thanks for the president's speech, Manmohan Singh said: "Let me reiterate in this house the commitment of our government to ensuring the dignity, safety and security of every woman of this country".

"The Nirbhaya Fund of Rs. 1,000 crore announced by the finance minister (P. Chidambaram) is further testimony of our government's commitment," he said.
'Nirbhaya' was the name given by the media to the young girl who was gang-raped in Delhi on December 16 last year.
