The Delhi government has ordered an inquiry into the alleged denial of entry to a differently-abled man by restaurant in south Delhi.

Nipun Malhotra, who was born with arthrogryposis, a rare congenital disorder that leads to lack of muscles in the arms and legs, had gone for dinner on Friday to Keya restaurant in south Delhi’s DLF Promenade Mall where the manager allegedly told him that as a policy they don’t allow differently-abled.

Malhotra, co-founder of Nipman Foundation, tweeted, “Was declined entry at Keya Delhi, DLF Promenade because they don’t allow ‘disabled’ inside!” The incident led to massive outrage on social media and Delhi government was forced to order an inquiry by a sub-divisional magistrate.

Deputy CM Manish Sisodia has directed the SDM, Vasant Vihar, to submit the report by Tuesday. “...The Delhi government makes it clear that national capital should lead by example on how people from all segments of the society have a right to live their lives honourably,” said a Delhi government spokesperson.

Malhotra said, “Our friends had decided to go to Keya for dinner. So nine of my friends, five boys and three girls, went to the restaurant. One of my friends politely told the manager that one of us would be coming on a wheelchair and that the manager should ensure he reaches the table. The manager asked if the friend was injured or had a disability. When my friend informed him that he had a disability, the manager said that as a policy they do not allow disabled people inside”.

Keya denied the allegation and said that it was a disabled-friendly restaurant. “Today (Friday) being Holi, we were denying stag entries and you (Nipun) were part of a stag group that was turned away. Our reason for denying stag entries on Holi was that people were coming intoxicated. We are sensitive people and would never deny entry to anyone on grounds of being differently-abled,” tweeted Keya.
