Govt plans to rate restaurants in Delhi before Games

delhi Updated: Oct 17, 2009 00:30 IST

The government on Friday said it will announce within a month guidelines for restaurants on food safety and come up with a set of dos and don'ts for tourists visiting the country for the Commonwealth Games.

"There are many restaurants in the Capital and to ensure food safety, we are planning to come out with guidelines for tourists within a month," Food Safety Standard Authority of India CEO V N Gaur said, referring to the country's readiness for the Commonwealth Games in October next year.

He was speaking at a World Food Day function organised by industry body CII in New Delhi.

Auditors appointed by agencies under the Quality Control of India will conduct random quality checks and give ratings on safety standards, Gaur said.

K Rajeswara Rao, joint secretary in the food-processing ministry, said there is a need to reach out to people in tier 2 and 3 cities on food safety as the concentration of rural people is more in such places.

He said the ministry has written to the human resources development ministry to include food safety and standard in the curriculum and dedicate October 16 as the Food Safety and Quality Day.
