Govt promises to take up Lankan navy firing on fishermen

delhi Updated: Jul 14, 2009 17:25 IST

The government on Tuesday promised to take up the issue of Sri Lankan Navy firing upon fishermen from Tamil Nadu venturing into the Palk Straits for fishing.

Home Minister P Chidamabaram gave this assurance to Lok Sabha while answering supplementaries asked by members from Tamil Nadu during Question Hour.

Chidambaram said India and Sri Lanka had come to an arrangement to stop such firing incidents on fishermen in the high seas in January this year.

"If any incident of firing on fishermen by Sri Lankan Navy after January 2009 is brought to the Centre's notice, we will immediately take it up," he said.

Admitting that such incidents have been reported in the past and some fishermen have lost their lives, the Home Minister said since January this year no such incident had been reported.

"Yes, it was a problem when Sri Lankan Navy was shooting at fishermen from Tamil Nadu and some of the fishermen lost their lives. But since January, nobody has been shot at," he said.

To another question, Chidambaram said there were reports of Pakistani forces capturing Indian fishermen out in the high seas. "In such instances, we negotiate with Pakistan and bring back the fishermen," he added.
