The students of a government school in Vijay Nagar had a ‘surprising’ menu on Thursday afternoon. The midday meal served at Sarv Hitkari government-aided school at Kailash Nagar area of Vijay Nagar had small insects in the rice!

The district administration and education officials said they will impose monetary penalty against an NGO. Jyoti Kumar and Monika Kumari, students of class 7 and 8, found several white-coloured insects in the karhi-rice served to them and immediately informed their head-master Narendra Kumar.

The school officials later informed the district administration about the matter, who took the samples of the food. The remaining food was later thrown off as found unfit for consumption. Basic education officer Rajesh Srivas told Hindustan Times the children spotted the insects in the food before it was consumed and they did not suffer any health complications.

“The food was found containing some white-coloured insects and the children were stopped by the school officials before it could be consumed,” Srivas told Hindustan Times. He said the NGO named, Bharat Ratna Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Dalit Utthan Samiti, served food at the school and would face monetary penalty in their payments.

However, sources told Hindustan Times that there have been several complaints of deteriorating food quality served by the NGO in recent past but the officials let the NGO off the hook each time. "In Thursday's incident, we have decided to penalise the NGO and deduct 10 per cent of their payments. There was some recklessness on their part," Srivas told Hindustan Times when asked about the recurring complaints about the NGO.
