Lok Sabha witnessed uproar on Friday after some Opposition members alleged that the government appeared to be moving towards privatisation of the prestigious AIIMS in the national capital.
Raising the matter during Question Hour, Mangani Lal Mandal (JD-U) alleged that government was moving towards privatisation by accepting Valiathan Committee recommendation that recruitment to Class C and D level posts should be done through reputed professional agencies in public/private sectors.
He asked if the government will fill backlog of vacancies in the SC/ST/OBC categories in AIIMS in these categories.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad's assurance that government was duty-bound to implement reservations, and that neither the AIIMS governing body nor the government had approved this proposal of Valiathan Committee, did not pacify members from BJP, JD-U and Left parties. JD-U members threatened to stage a walk out.
Mandal alleged that at a meeting held on November 26, the government had agreed to involve private bodies like ASSOCHAM and FICCI in its move to privatise AIIMS.
Leader of Opposition L K Advani said that while Health services in the country were not upto the mark, replies of the minister created the suspicion that government was moving towards privatisation.
Speaker Meira Kumar then suggested that a Calling Attention Motion be brought on the issue.
