Green hour icon left in the dark?

Whatever the Bachchans do makes news. First it was Amitabh Bachchan whose presence at a government function in Mumbai created a furore.

Now, that controversy has been followed up with what appears to be a snub to Abhishek Bachchan in an extremely unlikely context—the Earth Hour.

On Sunday, Bachchan claimed that Abhishek was sidelined during the Earth Hour event at India Gate on Saturday.

Abhishek was this year’s brand ambassador of the initiative organised by WWF-India.

In his blog, Bachchan wrote:

“The chief minister of Delhi, Mrs Sheila Dikshit, and a prominent member of the ruling Congress Party, is attending the moment. A few hours before the show was to start, apparently the audio-visual featuring Abhishek has been asked to be removed and banner posters bearing his photograph as ambassador have been stopped from being displayed. I wonder why?”

“Abhishek, who has been working so hard on the cause is obviously disappointed, especially since he had worked late into the night where he was shooting out of town to accommodate this creative. And I wonder. Am I hallucinating, or is there a pattern in all this?,” he asked.

Amitabh’s allegations stem from the controversy over his presence at the inauguration of the remaining four lanes of the eight-lane Bandra-Worli Sea Link in Mumbai recently.

The Congress had objected to Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan being seen with Amitabh, a friend of former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh, and of late, a brand ambassador for BJP-ruled Gujarat.

Dikshit, however, distanced herself from the entire thing. “I have nothing to do with it. I went there at the invitation of WWF. I switched off the lights. I am not the WWF and you go and ask,” she told PTI.

Despite repeated phone calls, the WWF did not respond.

Like his father, Abhishek, too, did not hide his disappointment at what had allegedly happened.

He tweeted: “I had sent a video msg (message) for all at the event, thanking them for their participation and support, but for some reason that couldn't be shown.”

“With regards to last night’s Earth Hour event at India Gate, I have nothing to say, nor any reaction. I believe that the cause is far more important than a mere mortal like me."

The actor is in Goa shooting for a film.
