Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday attacked Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati for not grooming the dalit leadership, and vowed to strive for bringing forward leaders from the community in coming elections.

He praised BSP founder Kanshi Ram, saying the movement he started to empower dalits came to a standstill after his death.

“You ask in Uttar Pradesh for five dalit leaders and you will hear Mayawati, Mayawati, Mayawati, Mayawati and Mayawati... I want that there should be a queue of leaders at all levels, in UP, Delhi, at block levels, in villages...,” he said.

Addressing a meet — National Dialogue on Social Disparity— organised by the national commission for scheduled castes, Gandhi reached out to the dalits and said, “It will be our effort to give maximum representation to dalits in coming elections,” he said and hoped that dalits would be the Congress party’s backbone in time to come.

Gandhi promised to open “locked doors” for dalits and said he would stand by them to ensure their progress irrespective of the amount of time it takes. No political party was giving equal rights to dalits, he said, adding a systemic discrimination against the community existed.
