The Supreme Court appointed SIT had handed over its report with other documents to complainant Zakia Jafri, whose husband and ex-parliamentarian Ehsan Jafri was among 69 people killed during post Godhara 2002 riots in Gujarat.

The report has given clean chit to Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi and 62 others for conspiracy.

“As directed by the Supreme Court, we have handed over the report to the complainant Zakia Jafri. All documents related to the probe undertaken by the SIT are with her now. We have also told the court that her counsel may seek time to study the report. We have no objection to that,” RS Jamwar, lawyer appearing for the SIT told the media after the court proceedings.

The metropolitan court in Ahmedabad has now posted the matter for hearing on May 10.

Meanwhile, Zakia’s lawyer has sought two months time to study the report and prepare the counter arguments on why the SIT has ignored vital evidences while arriving at the conclusion that there was no “prosecutable evidence” against Modi and others.

“It is now up to the court whether to accept the report and close the case,” Jamwar added.

Last month on April 10, the metropolitan court had noted that the SIT's final report in the 2002 Gujarat-riots-related Gulberg Society massacre case had found no evidence against any of the 62 accused including Modi.

The court had also observed that since the SIT had filed a closure report, Zakia Jafri, the main complainant, in keeping with Supreme Court orders, must be given the report and supporting documents filed by the SIT before May 10.
