It was a wedding revelry that went horribly wrong in northwest Delhi's Swaroop Nagar on Saturday night.
Ranbir Singh, 33, a resident of Alipur in outer Delhi, was at his cousin's marriage function when a gunshot, fired by a yet-to-be identified relative hit him above his left eyebrow and killed him instantly.
"One of Singh's relatives, most likely drunk, started firing gunshots in the air. One of the bullets missed the direction and hit Singh," said a police officer.
The incident took place at 9.20pm when Singh's cousin had almost tied the wedlock and was taking the seven pheras with his bride.
"No one got to know about the incident at first as there was too much noise but when people realised that the bullet had hit Singh, they immediately took him to the nearby Saroj Hospital where he was declared brought dead by the doctors," the officer added.
The police have not made any arrest yet as none of the eyewitnesses is confirming the incident. The weapon has not been found either. Firing during a celebration, even from a licensed weapon, is not permitted by law.
