Highlight Story

Two days before Delhi goes to poll, the war of words between the Chandni Chowk candidates of the BJP and the Congress continues.

On Tuesday, Vijender Gupta, the BJP’s candidate, alleged Kapil Sibal, the sitting MP and Congress candidate from the constituency, was involved in a Rs 100-crore scam. Gupta accused Sibal of corruption in the purchase of some equipment for the meteorological department during his tenure as Union Science and Technology Minister.

Addressing a press conference, Gupta said the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD had placed an order for purchasing 12 S-band Doppler weather radars worth more then Rs 100 crore, violating a key tender condition on providing the source code. “Shutting the doors on indigenously built radars developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation, the IMD has decided to buy these from Beijing Metstar, a Chinese assembler which has not offered to provide a source code. The firm has a joint venture with Lockheed Martin,” Gupta said, providing documents. Sibal, however, refuted the allegations and said Gupta was unnecessarily trying to spread falsehood about him.

Boost for Sibal

Kapil Sibal on Tuesday roped in BJP councillor from Ballimaran, Renuka Gupta to support him. “Gupta has joined Congress alleging discrimination in BJP,” Sibal said.
