Gurgaon and Noida are going to be closer than ever before in the next four years and Delhi Metro is going to be the catalyst of this change.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will also be creating history by constructing its deepest underground station building ever.
The underground station will be constructed below the existing station at Hauz Khas Metro station under the next phase of Metro's expansion.
The proposed interchange station will reduce commuting between the two NCR towns to 50 minutes. It will also turn Hauz Khas into one of the busiest interchange Metro stations with its footfall expected to increase from 40,000 to about 1.70 lakh by 2016.
"At present, it takes about 2 hours to commute between Gurgaon and Noida with the interchange at Rajiv Chowk. After the new interchange facility, the time will be about 50 minutes," said Anuj Dayal, chief spokesperson of Delhi Metro.
This will also be the only interchange station with direct connectivity to both Gurgaon (through existing Gurgaon-Jahangirpuri corridor) and Noida (through proposed Janakpuri West - Kalindi Kunj - Botanical Garden).
Once the new station building becomes operational, this will be the deepest station of Delhi Metro with 27m deep tracks. Presently, Chawri Bazar metro station on Line 2 (Gurgaon-Jahangirpuri) is the deepest underground metro station with 25m deep tracks.
Sources in the Delhi Metro said, the tunnelling work for the proposed station will be done with tunnel boring machines (TBM), while the station itself will be built using the 'cut and cover' technology, without disturbing the functioning of the existing station.
"The tunnel of the new station building will crisscross the tunnel of the existing station building. Carrying out tunnelling work below the existing underground Metro tunnel of Jahangirpuri - Gurgaon corridor without hampering Metro services is one of the biggest challenges DMRC will face," said an official of Delhi Metro.
"The new station building is to be built below Sarvapriya Park residential colony and will provide direct connectivity to Hauz Khas DTC Bus terminal and cater to thousands of residents of Malviya Nagar, Sarvapriya Park, Sadhna Enclave. The new station building to come up at Hauz Khas will be connected with the existing station through a ramp," Dayal said.
He said the new underground interchange station will also decongest Rajiv Chowk interchange station, one of the biggest in the Metro network, to a large extent.
Passengers commuting from Gurgaon to Noida and South Delhi localities like Nehru Place, Kalkaji among others will not have to go to Rajiv Chowk to change trains.
