A day after Delhi government gave directions to extend summer vacation in schools, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the Gurgaon administration too extended the summer break in their schools.

“It was felt that the present weather is not conducive to the school-going young children. We decided that summer vacation of MCD-run primary schools should be extended by one week,” said Mayor Kanwar Sain.

The mayor said schools would reopen on July 8 and not on June 30.

There are 1,850 municipal primary schools in which about 10 lakh children are studying.

Teachers will, however, have to report on July 1.

The Gurgaon administration too asked all private and government schools to compulsorily extend their summer vacations till July 5.

A number of schools in the city had announced opening of their schools on July 2, while some had already gone for summer vacations till July 5 on their own.

In its orders, issued to all the schools, Gurgaon District Magistrate Rajinder Kataria on Friday said it was imperative for all school administrations to extend summer vacations till July 5 for the safety and health of the students.

Col. Pratap Singh, president of Haryana Progressive Schools Conference and Chairman of CCA School, said the schools should have been left on their own to deciding on the opening of the schools after summer vacations.

“The Gurgaon administration should not impose its orders on school authorities. Already, many schools declared vacations till July 5,” he said.
