Delhi Police has filed an FIR against unknown persons for rape threats to martyr’s daughter Gurmehar Kaur. She had approached Delhi Commission for Women with a complaint on Monday.

A day after the Delhi Commission for Women urged Delhi Police to probe the alleged rape threats to DU student Gurmehar Kaur, a First Information Report (FIR) was registered by the cyber cell on Tuesday. Kaur has also been provided added protection by the police.

Delhi Police officials said that they have spoken to Gurmehar Kaur and have strengthened protection around her residence to ensure her safety.

The FIR was filed after the DCW forwarded Kaur’s complaint to Delhi Police. A case of outraging the modesty of a woman, criminal intimidation and under the IT Act has been registered against unknown persons, confirmed a senior police officer.

Senior officials also said that they have spoken to Gurmehar Kaur and have strengthened protection around her residence and premises to ensure her safety.

Meanwhile, ABVP has filed a complaint at Maurice Nagar police station seeking action against those who threatened her. “Unfortunately, she has blamed us for it but I want to clarify that none of our people are involved in it,” wrote Saket Bahuguna, national media convenor, ABVP, in his complaint to the police.

Kaur was trolled by Twitterati and others for her stance against the ABVP. Speaking to a news channel on Sunday, Kaur, a martyr’s daughter, had alleged that she had been threatened with rape by some Twitter users since her post on social media that read “I am a student from Delhi University. I am not afraid of the ABVP. I am not alone. Every student of India is with me. #StudentsAgainstABVP”

Though Kaur was likely to take part in the protest march in DU on Tuesday, she announced in a series of tweets in the morning that she would no longer be participating and is withdrawing from the “Fightback DU” movement.

There has since been an outpour of support for the Lady Shri Ram College student, with AAP members Atishi Marlena, Alka Lamba and Sarita Singh, meeting with Delhi Police chief at noon on Tuesday, to discuss why no action had been taken against those who made rape threats.

Kejriwal had also taken to twitter to say that he would meet the Lieutenant Governor at 2:30 pm on Tuesday to demand action against the “ABVP hooliganism and rape threats made to (Gurmehar Kaur).”
