For the last few months, Sayeed Amir Ali (38), the alleged spy who was nabbed by the Intelligence Bureau while trying to flee to Pakistan via Saudi Arabia, worked as a mobile phone repairer. Ali worked for Saini Telecom at Mansarovar Park in northeast Delhi. According to the police, his employer helped him find accommodation through another shopkeeper in Mansarovar Park.

“The shopkeeper referred him to one Akram Malik who is the landlord of the house in Jyoti Nagar, Naveen Shahdara. Ali was staying there in a one -room flat for the past one-and- a-half months. He paid Rs 1000 as rent,” said a senior police officer on condition of anonymity, as he is not authorised to speak to the media.

The police said that Ali had told his landlord that he was leaving for Saudi Arabia for good on November 12, the day he was arrested.

“He paid all his dues and said that he would not return. The very next day six policemen came along with Ali and went straight to his room. We had no clue what was happening but it scared us,” said Malik.

The police said that no tenant verification was conducted before Malik gave the room for rent to Ali.

The police added that Ali earlier worked as drive. His friend, one Imran, provided Ali with the visa 10 days before he was supposed to flee to Pakistan via Saudi Arabia.

“Ali was on his way to Dammam, the capital of Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province, on a flight which was to depart at 8 am on November 12. Imran apparently sent him the visa from Saudi Arabia,” the officer added.

The police said that during Ramadan, Ali was away from Delhi but his whereabouts were not known to anyone. Now they are trying to track where he was during that period.

The police said Ali is a divorcee and was under a lot of debt.
