Haphazard parking, absence of traffic signals choke CR Park

A visit to the two markets in Chittaranjan Park or commuting on the roads leading to these complexes is a gruelling task. Residents blame haphazard parking, especially near market no 1 and 2 for the mess. To find a solution to the persistent traffic chaos, a group of residents recently met the deputy commissioner of police (traffic) of south-east district. They discussed problems that are being faced by those living in the locality and adjoining areas such as DDA Flats, Kalkaji and Alaknanda.

The residents also gave a few suggestions. They requested the traffic police to place concrete dividers in the middle of the roads facing the markets to streamline traffic movement. They demanded deployment of traffic police personnel during peak hours outside markets and challan defaulters.

A resident who was part of the delegation said, “Installing ‘No Parking’ and ‘Tow Away Zone’ signboards are important to dissuade people. Placement of concrete dividers may slow down the traffic but will help to prevent traffic jams.”

Area councillor Virender Kasana accompanied the residents to the meeting. He said that as both markets are known for Bengali delicacies, people from far-flung areas of the city visit the place every day besides residents. “But, the available parking space here is limited and mostly occupied by shopkeepers. Thus, visitors are forced to park their vehicles either at the entrance of the markets or on roadsides,” he said.

This haphazard and unauthorised parking leaves no space for other vehicles to move. “During peak hours, traffic crawls here. Come festival season, commuting here becomes a nightmare as people park their vehicles in the internal lanes,” said Manjula Sengupta, a CR Park resident. She added: “They leave their vehicles in front of our gates, blocking our access. We either get stuck in our homes or waste time getting the vehicles removed.”

Residents also said motorists use the colony’s arterial roads to reach Sangam Vihar or Khanpur and Faridabad, which adds to the mess. “Instead of taking the busy Ravi Dass Marg (connecting Govindpuri) motorists take arterial roads of CR Park, Alaknanda and GK-II. We need a permanent solution,” said Sulbha Gupta, an Alaknanda resident.

Another problem according to residents is the lack of traffic signals in the area. Thus, they asked the DCP to install traffic signals at three crossings — CR Park’s block 10-SDMC primary school in DDA Flats, Kalkaji; and DDA Flats Kalkaji’s central market and main bus stand.

Robin Vatsa, general secretary of blocks A and B RWA DDA Flats, Kalkaji, said that the road facing the school is 80m wide but due to heavy encroachment on the carriageway there is not enough space to travel. “Shopkeepers of neighbouring Govindpuri Extension park vehicles near the SDMC school and unload goods. We have informed the traffic police about the misuse of the public land,” he said.

A senior traffic official said, “We have written to Delhi Development Authority to arrange placement of cement barricades on the roads facing the markets. Other issues are also being considered.”
