Incidents of harassment of siblings in Ujjain, a policeman beating up a young couple in Haryana and protests by way of moral policing marred Valentine's Day celebrations across the country on Saturday.
Police have also put under preventive custody nearly 600 activists of Shri Ram Sene, Bajrang Dal, Shiv Sena and other fringe groups in Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and the national capital since yesterday.
Four Bajrang Dal activists were arrested in Ujjain after they chased a brother and a sister who had gone to the Vikram University there and misbehaved with them. The Dal, however, claimed that the four were not their activists.
A sub-inspector of police Moola Ram was today placed under suspension on the charge of beating up a young couple after they were found together in a room in Jind, Haryana yesterday.
"The SI has been suspended and further action will be taken once a departmental enquiry is completed," Jind SP B Sateesh Balan told reporters.
Some 46 Shiv Sainiks were put under preventive custody in Gwalior and Bhopal while 5 members of the party were arrested for trying to create trouble in public parks in Janakpuri and Budhha Garden areas of the national capital, police said.
